Introduction to Cloud Computing - Part 2

Please do read Part 1 of this series: Introduction to Cloud computing - Part 1

  • Reduce costs
  • Scale up almost instantly
  • Pay per use
  • No server maintenance headache

One need not worry with the problems associated with the maintenance of the extra hardware, since the hardware is owned by another company (the supplier) and they are responsible for the same.

Just like our email servers or blogs. Do we care how the data is stored as long as its ensures that the data is secure and we get good performance.

The above scenario can also be applied to existing applications and to newly created applications to form the below mentioned service models in cloud computing.

There are three service models to cloud computing:

Infrastructure as a service (IAAS)
  • Allows users to run any application on cloud hardware of their choice
Platform as a service (PASS)
  • Allows users to create their own cloud applications using supplier specific tools and languages
  • Provides environments and tools to create online applications (e.g. Google App Engine, Microsoft Azure)
  • Low cost development
  • However, do note that the developer is limited to the tools provided by the provider.
Software as a service(SAAS)
  • Allows users to run existing applications online
  • Applications charged via subscription. Some can be free as well.
  • Accessible from any computer on the internet
  • Collaborative working
